Center of eye prosthetics is the oldest enterprise in Russia dealing in prosthetics of the most complex and fragile human organ – an eye. Its history started in June, 1943, when the Moscow Artificial Eyes Factory was founded by order of the Council of the People’s Commissars, becoming the industry’s father in the Soviet Union . At that time artificial eyes were made of “milk, colored and colorless glass”.

Today the glass still remains one of the most usable and convenient materials with excellent cosmetic features.

Modern ophthalmologic prosthetic devices are produced of special glass melted by means of an original technology, worked out and patented by the Center personnel. Such devices are resistant to mechanic attack of dust particles, anti-infective agents, maintain lively shine and are well damped with tears facilitating sliding of the eyelid. Using smelted glass threads the unique professional glassblowers display an individual print of an eye iris, blood system, copy the color and shape of an eyeball with the photographic accuracy. The combination of the advanced technologies and manual labor allows to achieve such a result that only a doctor with seasoned eye can distinguish an artificial eye from the real one.

Professional makers of artificial eyes of plastics work like artists – with paints and a brush. Looking into your eyes attentively they portray “mirror of your soul”.

Upon request of the Center of Eye Prosthetics scientific-research institutes incessantly invent new polymeric materials enabling the Center to improve its products.
